VAT Registration in Belgium

  1. Who must register: any business exceeding the €25,000 petite entreprise threshold, plus all non-Belgian businesses making taxable supplies in Belgium.
  2. Where: register via the FPS Finance (Service Public Fédéral Finances) online or at your local tax office.
  3. What you receive: a BTW/TVA number (format: BE + 10 digits) and a company number (ondernemingsnummer / numéro d'entreprise).
  4. Non-EU businesses: must appoint a fiscal representative (fiscaal vertegenwoordiger / représentant fiscal) in Belgium before registering for BTW.
  5. Timeline: register before you start making taxable supplies. Late registration can trigger backdated BTW assessments and penalties.

Belgian Invoice Requirements

Under the Belgian VAT Code (Code TVA / BTW-wetboek, Articles 43 and 53) and the EU VAT Directive (Articles 226–231), every BTW invoice issued by a Belgian business must contain:

  1. Supplier details — full legal name, registered address, BTW/TVA number and ondernemingsnummer.
  2. Customer details — full name and address; for cross-border B2B their VAT ID as well.
  3. Invoice number — unique, sequential, no gaps allowed in the numbering series.
  4. Invoice date — the date of issue; add date of supply if it differs.
  5. Description — nature and quantity of goods or services supplied.
  6. Unit price — net price per unit, excluding BTW.
  7. Rate and amount — applicable BTW rate (21%, 12% or 6%) per line, net subtotal per rate, total BTW amount, gross total.
  8. Special references — reverse charge statement where applicable, exemption references, petite entreprise notice if exempt.

Worked Examples

Brussels consultant — standard rate invoice

A consultant invoices a Belgian client €4,500 net for advisory work. Standard 21% BTW applies. Gross: €4,500 × 1.21 = €5,445 (BTW: €945). Use the VAT calculator Add mode to verify.

Belgian restaurant — split rate invoice

A Ghent restaurant invoices €2,000 net for food consumed on premises (12% rate) and €500 net for bread sold for takeaway (6% rate). BTW on food: €240. BTW on bread: €30. Total BTW: €270. Total including BTW: €2,770.

B2B services to a French company

A Antwerp design agency provides branding to a client in Paris with a valid FR VAT ID. Reverse charge applies: invoice at €0 BTW, show both BTW numbers, add reverse charge reference. The French client self-accounts 20% on their side.

Worked Example — Adding 6% Reduced BTW

A Leuven bookshop sells books worth €400 net. The reduced 6% rate applies to books.

Gross = €400 × 1.06 = €424 · BTW = €24

Verify instantly with the VAT calculator — select Belgium and set 6% in Custom-rate mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the VAT rate in Belgium in 2026?

Belgium's standard VAT rate (BTW/TVA) is 21%. Two reduced rates apply: 6% for food, books, newspapers, water supply and pharmaceutical products; 12% for restaurant meals, social housing, electricity, gas, water supply and passenger transport.

What is the petite entreprise scheme?

The petite entreprise (kleine onderneming) is Belgium's small business VAT exemption. If your annual turnover was below €25,000 in the previous year, you do not charge BTW and do not file VAT returns. The trade-off: you also cannot reclaim input VAT on business purchases.

What goods qualify for the 6% reduced rate?

Food (except restaurant meals), books, newspapers, e-books, water supply, pharmaceutical products, medical equipment and aids, and printed publications qualify for Belgium's 6% reduced rate.

What goods qualify for the 12% reduced rate?

Restaurant meals, catering, social housing, electricity, gas, water, passenger transport, cultural events, and digital books qualify for Belgium's 12% reduced rate. This 12% tier is unique in the EU.

Do I need to register for VAT in Belgium?

Yes, if your annual turnover exceeds €25,000 or you make taxable supplies from Belgium. Register via FPS Finance. You receive a BTW number (BE + 10 digits). Non-EU businesses must appoint a fiscal representative first.

What must a Belgian VAT invoice contain?

Supplier and customer details (name, address, VAT numbers), unique sequential invoice number, invoice date, description of goods or services, unit price, applicable BTW rate per line, net amount, total BTW, gross total, payment terms, and any reverse charge or exemption statements.

When does reverse charge apply in Belgium?

When a Belgian business supplies B2B services to a VAT-registered customer in another EU country, when receiving services from abroad, and for domestic construction, scrap metal and gold. The invoice shows €0 BTW, both VAT numbers, and a reverse charge reference.

Is Belgium part of OSS?

Yes. Belgium participates in the EU One Stop Shop since July 2021. Belgian businesses making B2C cross-border distance sales above the €10,000 pan-EU threshold can register for OSS via FPS Finance and file one quarterly return covering all destination countries.

What is the late payment interest rate in Belgium?

Under the EU Late Payment Directive, commercial B2B debts in Belgium accrue interest at the ECB main refinancing rate plus 8 percentage points from the day after the due date. A €40 minimum compensation fee also applies. Use the late-payment calculator to compute exact amounts.
