2026 VAT Rates by Country (Standard vs Reduced)

When should I use Custom rate mode instead of a country preset?

Use Custom rate when the standard rate does not apply: reduced rates (for example Spain 4%, France 5.5% or 2.1%), parking rates, temporary rate cuts, or non-EU scenarios. Pick the country preset first to load the official 2026 standard rate, then switch to Custom and type the reduced rate before calculating.

How do I handle OSS distance sales versus reverse charge in this calculator?

For B2B sales to a VAT-registered customer in another EU country, the reverse charge usually applies: invoice at 0% VAT and show both VAT numbers. For B2C distance sales above €10,000 pan-EU turnover, charge the destination country's rate and report it through OSS. Use the calculator to verify each country's rate, then confirm the regime with the reverse-charge vs OSS checker before invoicing.

Which source are the 2026 rates taken from and when were they verified?

Rates follow the EU Commission VAT rates reference and national tax authority publications, last verified 25 September 2026. Standard rates are built into every country preset; reduced and super-reduced rates are covered through Custom rate mode. Always confirm the applicable rate with your national tax authority before filing.

How to Use This VAT Calculator

  1. Pick your country. The official 2026 standard rate fills in automatically — for example 19% for Germany, 20% for France, 23% for Ireland.
  2. Choose a mode. Use Add VAT when you quote from a net price, Remove VAT when you work backwards from a gross shelf or invoice price, and Custom rate for reduced rates or non-EU scenarios.
  3. Enter the price and read instant results. Net, VAT and gross appear immediately. Use Copy results to paste them into a quote, or Download .txt to archive the calculation.
  4. Double-check cross-border cases. If your customer sits in another EU country, read the rules section below before invoicing — the rate on this page may not be the rate you charge.

Mathematical Formula for VAT Calculations

Understanding how Value Added Tax is applied or extracted mathematically ensures accurate bookkeeping and accounting ledgers. Every EU computation uses the same three quantities — net (excluding VAT), VAT amount, and gross (including VAT). For country-by-country worked examples, see our how to calculate VAT guide.

1. Formula to Add VAT (Net to Gross)

To calculate the gross total when you have a net price before tax, use the following formula:

Gross Amount = Net Amount × (1 + (VAT Rate ÷ 100))

Example: If a service costs €200 net with a standard 21% Dutch VAT rate:

€200 × (1 + 0.21) = €200 × 1.21 = €242 gross total (€42 VAT)

2. Formula to Remove VAT (Gross to Net)

Removing VAT from a gross receipt total requires inverse division rather than simple percentage subtraction:

Net Amount = Gross Amount ÷ (1 + (VAT Rate ÷ 100))

Example: If a retail receipt shows €120 total including 20% VAT:

€120 ÷ (1 + 0.20) = €120 ÷ 1.20 = €100 net amount (€20 VAT)

To find the rate itself: r = (VAT ÷ Net) × 100. Always round each invoice line to two decimals using round half-up, then sum the rounded lines — rounding only the grand total is the classic source of one-cent mismatches with accounting software.

EU VAT Rules That Change Your Number

In 2026 standard rates span from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary, and almost every country runs several reduced rates for food, books, hospitality or construction — the table above shows the standard rate plus each country's most common reduced rate. But the rate is only half the story: the EU taxes consumption where it happens (the destination principle). For B2B services to a VAT-registered customer in another member state, the reverse charge normally applies — you invoice at €0 VAT, print both VAT numbers, and the buyer self-accounts. For B2C distance sales of goods, once your pan-EU cross-border turnover passes €10,000 per year you must charge the destination country's rate and declare it through the Union One-Stop Shop (OSS) instead of registering everywhere. B2C digital services are generally taxed where the consumer lives (subject to small-business and special-scheme rules), which pulls many non-EU sellers into the non-Union OSS. Confirm any number here against your national guidance or with the VAT number validator and reverse-charge vs OSS checker before you file.

Territories Outside the EU VAT Scope

Certain regions affiliated with EU member states are excluded from the official EU VAT territory. Transactions with these areas are treated as exports/imports:

Real-World Business Use Cases

Freelancer quoting in Berlin

A designer quotes a €2,400 net project to a German startup. Add VAT mode at 19% gives €456 VAT and a €2,856 gross quote in one step — ready to paste into the EU invoice generator with the same numbers.

French shop selling to Belgium

An online seller nearing the €10,000 distance-sales threshold checks both rates: 20% at home, 21% for Belgian consumers. Remove VAT mode also lets them reverse-engineer competitor shelf prices back to net for margin math.

Dutch agency invoicing Ireland

A B2B invoice to a Dublin company with a valid VAT ID uses reverse charge — €0 VAT. The calculator still verifies the Irish 23% figure the client will self-account, keeping both ledgers consistent.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I calculate VAT exclusive (Net to Gross)?

To add VAT to a net amount, multiply the net figure by (1 + (VAT Rate / 100)). For example, €200 net at 21% Dutch VAT: €200 × 1.21 = €242 gross (€42 VAT).

How do I remove VAT from a total (Gross to Net)?

To calculate the net amount from a gross total, divide the gross amount by (1 + (VAT Rate / 100)). For example, €120 gross at 20% VAT: €120 ÷ 1.20 = €100 net (€20 VAT).

Why can't I just subtract 20% to remove a 20% VAT rate?

Subtracting 20% from a gross price undercalculates the net price. Because the tax was originally calculated on the smaller net amount, removing it requires dividing by 1.20 rather than multiplying by 0.80.

Which EU country has the highest VAT rate in 2026?

Hungary charges the highest standard VAT rate in the EU at 27%, followed by Croatia, Denmark and Sweden at 25%.

Which EU country has the lowest standard VAT rate?

Luxembourg has the lowest standard rate at 17%, followed by Malta at 18% and Cyprus at 19%.

Do I charge VAT to a client in another EU country?

For B2B sales the reverse charge usually applies: invoice at €0 VAT and show both VAT numbers. For B2C distance sales above €10,000 pan-EU turnover, charge the destination country's rate and report it through OSS.

Why does my result differ by a cent from my accounting software?

One-cent gaps come from rounding order. Round every invoice line to two decimals first, then add the rounded lines — never round only the final total.

What is the difference between zero-rated and exempt VAT?

Zero-rated goods have a 0% VAT rate applied, but businesses can still reclaim VAT on input expenses. VAT-exempt goods have no VAT charged, and businesses cannot claim back input VAT.

How do I round VAT decimals on commercial invoices?

Under EU invoicing guidelines, VAT amounts must be rounded to two decimal places to the nearest cent. Standard mathematical rounding applies: values ending in 0.005 or higher round up to the next cent.

Does Northern Ireland follow EU VAT rules?

Under the Northern Ireland Protocol, Northern Ireland has a dual status: it remains part of the UK VAT system for services, but follows EU VAT rules for cross-border trade in physical goods using the XI country prefix.

Are price quotes in Europe required to show VAT?

Yes. EU consumer protection rules mandate that all retail prices displayed to end consumers (B2C) must include VAT (gross pricing). B2B wholesale quotes may show tax-exclusive prices provided the tax structure is clearly stated.

Informational purposes only — not tax advice. Always confirm the applicable rate with your national tax authority.

Complete Guide to European Union VAT Calculations (2026)
